As part of its networking and research activities, the Asian Center organizes local and international conferences singly or in cooperation with other organizations, on a wide range of issues related to Philippine studies and Asia-Pacific studies. In recent years, these have included the following: Building an East Asian Security Community (2006); Philippines-Japan Relations at a Crossroads: Emerging Bilateral and Regional Issues (2006); ASEAN-China Relations: Building the Foundations of Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity (2006); Philippines-China Relations: Charting New Directions in a Changing Global Environment (2005); The Philippines Between Asia and Oceania (2005); Asian Democracy and Electoral Reforms (2004); Joint Conference with the Korean Association of Asian Studies on Global Changes and their Impact on Asia (2004); Southeast Asian Studies in Asia: An Assessment towards a Collaborative Action Plan (2002); UP-Hannam University Interactive Conference (2002); and Conference on Asia in the Next Millennium: Prospects for Peace and Development (2000). The Asian Center, through the University of the Philippines, is currently a member of various international networks such as the Network of East Asian Think Tanks, the East Asian Studies Network, the South and Southeast Asian Association for the Study of Religion, and the Globalization Studies Network. It has also recently represented the Philippines in the East Asia Vision Group, the ASEAN-India Vision 2020 Workshop, and in various activities of the ASEAN University Network. Scholars and practitioners from all over Asia often come to visit the Center. Within the country, the Center is actively involved with the Philippine Association for China Studies, and in 2005 helped launch the Korea Studies Association of the Philippines. Research Affiliates The Center extends affiliation to visiting researchers who are interested in undertaking research on the Philippines or on other countries and peoples of Asia. From 1998-2006, the Center hosted affiliates from University of Jyvaskyla (Finland), Dong-eui University (South Korea), Oxford University (UK), School of Oriental and African Studies (UK), Sophia University (Japan), Kobe University (Japan), the Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences (China), Hua Qiao University (China), Carleton College (USA), Georgia Southern University (USA), Columbia University (USA), Northern Territory University (Australia), Asia-Europe Institute (Malaysia), and Uppsala University (Sweden). Publications The Center publishes the Asian Studies Journal (since 1963); ASJ is issued twice a year. Its list of subscribers spans major academic and research institutions in North America, Europe, and Asia. Another journal focusing on Philippine studies, Lipunan, which was jointly published by the defunct Institute of Asian Studies with other social science units, has since ceased publication. It also grants access to electronic journal services to which the University subscribes, such as Proquest Academic Research Library and EBSCOhost. In addition, right across the Asian Center Library is the library of the Institute of Islamic Studies. The Asian Center Museum Within its limited financial resources, the Center maintains a collection of Philippine archaeological and ethnographic materials, examples of which are on display at the Bulwagang Sala'am. Museum tours may be arranged for small groups of elementary and high school students, with an introduction to the permanent display. In support of instruction and research, the Center also produces and maintains a small collection of Philippine and other Asian archaeological, ethnographic, historical, and other cultural materials in the form of photographs, slides, films, audio and video tapes, etc. Bulwagang Sala'am (Hall of Peace) This conference hall has a seating capacity of 150 people. It also houses part of the Center's ethnographic and archeological collection. The hall is a favorite venue not only for lectures and academic conferences but also for assemblies by non-government organizations and other groups from outside the university. Visitor Information THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES-DILIMAN The University of the Philippines System is the country's premier institution of higher learning and has seven constituent universities nationwide.
